Generally, when a new service offers something better than a 10gb bandwidth for free, the guys on the Internet say it’s too good to be true, that there’s no way the host can pay for its costs. And I have seen quite a few hosts–both big and small–vanish from the scene. One provider begged its members to click on pay-per-click ads. Google Adsense banned that provider’s account and confiscated it’s earnings.

Still, I say that within reason, and with an eye on protecting vital information and personal security, we should give a good number of these free hosts the benefit of the doubt. (After all, disk storage and bandwidth continue to fall in price.) Just exercise caution and common sense, back up your work, and don’t place all your eggs in one basket.

Messageboard.com :: For Webmasters By Webmasters?

Here’s my recent reply to Messageboard.com (which alleges that it is “For Webmasters By Webmasters”):

What do you allow [in your forum]? You have to look a bit to find my name on the Web sites I listed. And those sites review/promote Web hosts and search engines and facilitate users.

Like a huge portion of the Internet, I have Google ads (I’ve had them on for a week, but I’ve only made $10, which doesn’t even get us out of the gas station here in Canada). Other than Google and what I still haven’t received for promoting a bank, I don’t get any money or special bargains from Internet businesses.

I’ve surfed quite a bit and find that different webmasters define self-promotion differently (and almost all webmasters are somehow promoting themselves or their affiliates, even when they pretend it isn’t so). It gets confusing and that creates apathy among users.

Anyway, thanks. See you around in cyperspace.

[Yeah, and the location of the rules varies among various Web sites. But I guess you are expected to spend 5 minutes just looking for the rules — 5 minutes on each and every Web site. Whew! Where’s the user friendliness on this Great Web?]

Fear of Submitting Brought on by Urban Myth?

Quite a few surfers say things like

I wouldn’t advise you to use autosubmitters, many Search Engines don’t allow auto-submissions,

or

I think autosubmitting is like a quick fix.

I’ve posted my response elsewhere. Here’s what I said:

You guys sometimes advise against automated submissions, but you never provide data/facts to back up what you say. Small European search engines are unlikely to randomly crawl your sites. You have to bring your site to their attention. If everyone relied exclusively on big search engines for traffic, this World Wide Web would not be a net–just a one-way toll road.

Even MSN offers automated multiple search-engine submissions (but please note that their service is not free). See for example microsoft items or http://submitit.bcentral.com/subcats2.htm

Microsoft says,

Maintaining top listings on a variety of search engines helps drive new visitors to bigfishtackle.com. . . . It’s very important to stay diligent with search engine submissions. . . . When he’s pressed for time, he knows that [automatic submissions are] still working for him, automatically checking his listings and resubmitting URLs on a regular basis.

Why would Microsoft automate submissions to various engines, directories, and services if those services picked up on everything the big search engines indexed? And why would German and Dutch engines pay much attention to English directories? Anyway, who says the whole world can’t submit to foreign-language search engines? And who says anyone is completely reliant on quick fixes? Most people utilize various services and techniques. For example, Google may index DMOZ but DMOZ does not index Google. DMOZ is run by human editors who manually choose sites. The BBC in England has a search engine/directory run by human editors, too. They found one of my sites through a press release — not from Google or Yahoo, etc.

And if being listed on FFA’s spells doom for a site, then we are all doomed: any stranger can submit any site to any FFA from anywhere in the world. Who’s to say the aliens aren’t busy submitting your site to 100s of thousands of FFAs right this second.

We can’t label the various sectors — the Internet is too complex for generalizations.

I can’t be sure what the problem is, but if I was you I would stay clear of txhost.info. My experience with them says to me that they are both unprofessional and intrusive. If I divine correctly, they jump to snap decisions based upon a lack of expertise. It’s a waste of time, and their offer of a 5gb bandwidth with no control panel (just ftp) does not match the other readily available plans out here in this cyberland of complete strangers. free hosting

Quite often, it seems, free hosting plans are tacked together by teenagers pretending to briefly reign as “kings of the hill.” I’ve even talked to one or two of them on the phone. free webhosting

Then there’s free hosts and there’s fringe hosts. The fringe hosts are free, too, but you’re left wondering about the owners/operators/hobbyists. Are they nosey pranksters and mean-spirited drunks? Are they the smallest of small-time political hacks? An unemployed snake-oil salesman would find it easy to set up a borderline server next to the beer fridge.

Maybe they don’t like Canadians.

I guess we have to give them the benefit of the doubt. I guess we have to hope they’re not phishing: I guess we have to hope they’re not scamming users into surrendering private information that will later be used for identity theft. I know quite a few wealthy men and women who would not even give a free host the email addresses they use to decoy (i.e., avoid) bulk spam, never mind names and phone numbers.

But like I said, I can’t be sure about what’s going on at txhost.info. And that’s possibly because that’s the way most webhosting businesses play the game. Ah well, pretty soon they’ll all get gobbled up by lawyers, fighters, whistle blowers, insurance companies, and irate moms.

Yes, it’s thumbs down. But don’t generalize too much, and remember, I still enjoy http://memebot.com, http://moved.in, http://hostrave.com, http://atspace.com, http://90megs.com, http://brinkster.com, http://netfreehost.com, and http://thefishfinder.com.

Has anyone succeeded at registering with http://spotquick.com? Spotquick allows input from various countries around the world but only allows American zip codes, and even when everything you’ve typed in seems ok, and is ok, you get the message, “Sorry, something went wrong trying to create the account.”

Spotquick.com can’t even get it’s name right in its title tag: –title– SpotQucik - Quality FREE Hosting! –/title–

It should be SpotQuick, not ..Qucik.

A BIASED rating system forms the basis of http://clickherefree.com’s “Voted Best” section. They just increased the bandwidth to 150gb and the diskspace to 1000mb, and it looks like you can have more than one 150/1000 account under your chosen username–for example, under one username, you can create 2 accounts, totalling 300gb of bandwidth and 2000mb of diskspace.

Gone Today, Gone Tomorrow
Last week I mentioned http://havesite.com/ and http://www.amfr.xthost.co.uk, but they did not stick around for long. http://www.amfr.xthost.co.uk was part of the http://www.amfr.org/ network, which brings together sites that provide free hosting for a week or two before ending it all due to alleged abuse or repair.

http://havesite.com/ and http://www.amfr.xthost.co.uk were up for 2 or 3 weeks and then folded. Maybe they will be back someday, only to go down again?

I usually avoid reviewing Web hosts who upload ads onto members sites, but here’s one I like:

Yesterday another free service -- http://www.hostingposts.com/ -- accepted my application for a free 100mb webspace account. Of course 100mb is not a huge pie -- you can only fit so many email accounts and databases in there -- but this no-cost plan does give you cpanel pro, fantastico, unlimited email accounts, unlimited subdomains, unlimited sql, cgi, php, perl, 1-3gb in bandwidth, and more.

When I registered at the www.hostingposts.com forum and applied for a free-hosting account, I let them know that I'm reviewing ad-free, no-cost Web hosts. Approximately 24 hours later (maybe more, maybe less), they gave me a password and said they hope I enjoy their service.

A new "invitation only" free hosting service has started up. Its members send invitations to friends (similar to the Gmail-beta membership setup). I looked into it and posted a request for an invite in the www.moved.in forum. Moved.in is most certainly the equal to the services I have listed below, in the preceding post.
